Community Connections in Handsworth

With Kalpana outside the Sons of Rest, Handsworth Park.

There are community initiatives that take months of planning, multiple funding applications, steering committees, consultations, business plans and long evaluation.

And there are times when you just need to put the kettle on…

Today was our third weekly drop-in coffee session at the Sons of Rest in Handsworth Park, bringing this fantastic resource back into community use for the purpose it was built; the people of Handsworth coming together and sharing their experiences in a welcoming environment.

We hosted twenty people today, with tea, coffee and snacks available thanks to the generosity of volunteers. In most cases, people who had lived in Handsworth for many years were meeting people from their neighbourhood for the first time.

People from Handsworth Ward, Birchfield, Handsworth Wood, Lozells, Soho & Jewellery Quarter all met together and found laughter and friendship. Visitors from India came as well! We made connections and shared problems, swapped phone numbers and agreed to meet up again.

Join us every Wednesday at the Sons of Rest building, near to the Wellbeing Centre, between 2-4pm. All are welcome.
